My partner and I stayed in the Nur Beach hotel for a week and enjoyed developing our kite skills with Nico and Augustine at Prokite. We had both kitesurfed previously in Fuerteventura and Rhodes but were still very much at the repetitive board starting phase, achieving occasional rides!
The location is excellent. I would recommend staying at Nur as you could stroll from your bungalow to the kitesurfing centre in about 10 seconds, so it was a very relaxed way to arrive at a lesson! Jambiani is a safe, flatwater lagoon which was amazing as a beginner for lessons. I would recommend it as somewhere to start learning to kite. Very strong wind and waves can feel a bit intimidating as a beginner, so the conditions here were perfect to get used to the kite and the board. There were also no obstructions (except for the seaweed farms) to worry about, and there aren't too many other kiters around to bump in to.
The team use radios to communicate with you whilst you are in the water so you feel safe and well instructed at all times. I was watched more closely at Prokite than I have been in other centres. Unfortunately, I was stung by a bluebottle jellyfish during one of my lessons in the lagoon (which was pretty horrendous)! Fortunately, my instructor Augustine realised what had happened and within about 20 seconds my kite was taken off me and I helped into the boat. After deciding I was in too much pain to continue the lesson I was taken back to shore and had upmost sympathy from the team for the rest of the day/week! I felt that in some centres the instructors would have moaned/complained that i'd aborted the lesson, but Nico and his team genuinely seemed to care that I was in pain. I returned to the water 48 hours later, but in full length leggings and rash vest for my next lesson!
Overall my competence and confidence at kite surfing improved significantly throughout my lessons with Prokite, and I went from board starting and travelling about 2m and then sinking (!), to starting to ride upwind in both directions and starting to attempt sliding transitions. Augustine was an excellent, patient and gentle tutor who I would recommend to anyone. We had three enjoyable lessons and he has inspired me to continue learning to kitesurf in the future.
